ABOUT US Erika's Lighthouse is comprised of an adult Board of Directors of concerned parents, mental health professionals and educators, and an active Teen Club. Together we strive to break stigma and educate communities about mental health issues through various programs directed toward schools, teachers, parents, the kids themselves and most recently physicians and other health professionals.
At Erika's Lighthouse we raise awareness about adolescent depression and mental health for young people through a variety of programs.
Red Flags Program
At the core of our mission is the Red Flags Program, a Comprehensive Adolescent Depression Awareness Program for middle school students. The center of the curriculum is a 45- minute video called "Claire's Story" about thirteen-year-old Claire, her struggle with depression and how she got well. The material is designed to help students understand mental illness as a treatable brain disorder and to recognize the warning signs. Erika's Lighthouse provides schools with this curriculum free of charge. Additionally, if feasible, we provide the in-service training needed to implement the program, also free of charge.
Parent Handbook on Childhood and Adolescent Depression
Our new 88-page, spiral-bound handbook, written by and for parents is subtitled, "How to Get Help and Things you Might Want to Know." It has been widely and warmly received by the parents it was intended to help, and most recently by Chicago-area pediatricians and other health care professionals. The book can be previewed and downloaded from our site, and group copies can be ordered by contacting us directly. Individual hard copies are also available on-line at Amazon.com.
Walkathon
Every Spring, we host our annual Walkathon.
Designed to be both fun and informative, the 2.5-mile walk features informational signs featuring facts and figures and insights created by our Teen Club to enlighten the walkers and provide thought-starters for conversations.
We strongly believe that early identification and intervention can help young people get the help they need to lead happy, healthy, and productive lives. For more information on any of our activities, please
