TEACHERS

Teachers can be very instrumental in helping the depressed child. Because they regularly interact with the child outside of the home and family situation, teachers are in a favorable position to observe behaviors that parents might miss especially the child's interaction with others and behaviors when alone. The teacher can be first to suspect depression in a child.

WHAT CAN TEACHERS DO?

If a child's behavior seems out of the norm a teacher can begin to document observed behaviors. Pay attention to clusters of symptoms observed over an extended period of time which seems to impair a student's ability to function.

We ask that teachers become familiar with the signs and symptoms of depression. Also please know what your school protocol for helping at risk students. Lastly develop accommodation skills which often are simple steps to reduce classroom stress.
